Brookings Event - Women, sexuality, and social change in China Join us on April 3 for a discussion of changing attitudes in China toward gender and sexuality issues. Brookings Event Invitation Women, sexuality, and social change in China Friday, April 3, 2015, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm The Brookings Institution, Falk Auditorium 1775 Massachusetts Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20036 The era of market reform has created a burgeoning Chinese middle class that craves not only increased consumption of goods and the freedom of self-expression, but also liberty over sexual life. At the same time, women have strengthened their call for the rights and representation to accompany the responsibility of “holding up half the sky.” As a result of this aroused social consciousness, feminist thought in universities is widespread, diverse sexual lifestyles are being discussed publically, awareness of sexually-transmitted diseases is growing, and measures to protect women from domestic violence are being strengthened. While these trends point to an improved environment for women and LGBTQ individuals, much work remains to be done in the policy and legal arenas to challenge long-standing discrimination policies and to ensure that these groups receive protection under the law. On April 3, the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution seeks to explore the policy implications of China’s sexual revolution through the perspectives and voices of practitioners and academics. Li Yinhe, China’s leading sexologist, will deliver a keynote address, which will set the tone for the subsequent two panels on public awareness of gender and sexuality issues and protecting the legal rights of women and sexual minority populations This event will be live webcast.
