China and Latin America: Seeking a Path to Sustainable DevelopmentApril 16, 2015 // 10:00am — 12:00pm Event Co-sponsors: Global Sustainability and Resilience Program Latin American Program The rise of China has been a boon to the economies of Latin America for more than a decade with Chinese investment being particularly active in the energy and mining sectors. At this April 16th Wilson Center meeting, members of the Working Group on Development and Environment in Latin America will debut a new report on how Chinese investment in these sectors has triggered a new round of environmental degradation and social conflict in the Americas, a round of conflict that most Latin American governments have failed to manage properly. Speakers from will discuss not only the environmental conflicts linked to Chinese investment, but also highlight some innovative steps by Latin American governments and Chinese companies that can point the way to a more balanced approach to commodity-led growth and sustainable development.
